Distribution Map of Guang Eco-museums

Guangxi is the the border area which has been inhabited with twelve native nationalities such as Zhuang, Han, Yao, Miao, Dong, Shui, Maonan, Gelao, Yi, Maonan, Jing and Hui, etc. It is a place with rich national cultural heritage. Guangxi is the famous "Zhuang Hometown" and "Yao Metropolis" and the settlement for Mulao, Maonan and Jing nationalities. The mission of protecting and saving the national culture still has a long way to go. In recent years, with rapid procession of modernization and the development of economy in depth and width, the invasion of modern civilization on traditional culture has speeded up and many precious national cultural heritage have disappeared gradually. Therefore, the protection of national culture is extremely urgent.
At the end of the 1980s and the beginning of 1990s, Mr Su Donghai from National Museum of China, was the first to introduce the concept of eco-museum from abroad and held cooperation with Norway government and Guizhou provincial government, launching the first batch of eco-museums into practice in Guizhou province in China. In 2002, Department of Culture, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (Guangxi Culture Department) organized a group to Guizhou and did investigation to Guizhou ethnic eco-museums and invited some experts to give lectures on experience and lessons of the construction of eco-museums at home and from abroad. In 2004, on the basis of previous experience of ethnic eco-museums from Guizhou, Yunnan and Inner Mongolia, Guangxi Culture Department began to explore the construction ideas and models of ethnic eco-museums with six principles as its instruction. With all factor such as region, nationalities, influence, irradiation, efficiency and research project taken into consideration and centering round Guangxi Museum of Nationalities, the 1+10 Project of Guangxi Ethnic Eco-Museum Development (1 represent Guangxi Museum of Nationalities, 10 is the 10 eco-museums distributed Guangxi) has been put up. This model has fully combined the eco-museums distributed in Guangxi and made them the work stations and research base for Guangxi Museum of Nationalities. As the head of these eco-museums, Guangxi Museum of Nationalities has effieciently integrated the construction of these eco-museums with collecting, protecting, studying, inheriting and displaying Guangxi traditional culture, thus forming a museum network and progressively exploring the development of ethnic eco-museums with distinct Guangxi style.
From 2004-2005, under the support of committees of CPC and Guangxi government, Guangxi Culture Department and Guangxi Museum of Nationalities had carried out three pilot projects construction: (1) Eco-museum of White-trousers Yao in Lihu, Nandan County, (2) Eco-museum of Dong in Sanjiang and (3) Eco-museum of Zhuang in Jiuzhou, Jingxi County. During the process of construction, they have emphasized the active participation of the local villagers and expert instructions. In 2006, on the basis of the three pilot projects and the practical situations of every nationality in Guangxi, through scientific reasoning, detailed plan and design, Guangxi Culture Department and Guangxi Museum of Nationalities drafted a plan -- the 1+10 Project of Guangxi Ethnic Eco-museum Development, which was approved by the government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. After that, the other seven eco-museums were set up and opened to the public one by one. They are: (4) Eco-museum of Hakka in Hezhou City; (5) Eco-museum of Black-clothes Zhuang Nationality in Napo; (6) Eco-museum in Shangdao Ancient Village in Changgangling, Lingchuan County; (7) Eco-museum of Jin Nationality in Dongxing; (8) Eco-museum of Miao Nationalities of Antai, Rongshui County; (9) Eco-museum of Zhuang Nationality in Longji, Longsheng County; (10) Eco-museum of Aoyao Nationality in Guchenyao, Jinxiu County.
